Chamakh and Morocco to Face Central Africa

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has published Dominique Cuperly’s roster for the Atlas Lions’ upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifier versus the Central African Republic which will be played on September 4.

The Frenchman who is currently filling in for Eric Gerets has given Fettah Boukhris and Youssef El Arabi their first call-ups. Besides that, the squad is practically identical to the one that was assembled for Morocco’s 2-1 win over Equatorial Guinea on August 11.
“We’re going to have to be vigilant. We also have to show something and to do that we have to pull the best we can out of the group that’s at our disposal,” said Cuperly while speaking to Le Matin regarding the qualifier.
Below is the squad list by position:
Goalkeepers: Karim Fegrouch (Wydad Casablanca), Nader Lamyaghri (Wydad Casablanca), Ahmed Mouhamadina (Olympique Khouribga)

Defenders: Mehdi Benatia (Udinese), Adil Karrouchy (Difaa El Jadida), Fettah Boukhris (FUS Rabat), Morad Ainy (Raja Casablanca), Rachid Soulaimani (Raja Casablanca), Michael Chrétian Basser (AS Nancy), Chakib Benzoukane (Sofia), Hicham Mahdoufi (Raja Casablanca)

Midfielders: Adil Hermach (RC Lens), Mohamed Berabeh (Al Dhafra), Issam Erraki (Al Wahda), M'bark Boussoufa (Anderlecht), Karim Al Ahmadi (Feynoord Rotterdam), Nabil El Zhar (Liverpool)

Strikers: Mounir El Hamdaoui (Ajax Amsterdam), Marouane Chamakh (Arsenal), Youssef El-Arabi (Caen), Adil Taarabt (Queens Park Rangers), Youssef Hadji (AS Nancy)

Arsenal Wins 1-2, Chamakh for van Persie

Marouane Chamakh and Arsenal traveled to Lancashire to take on Blackburn Rovers, a team that has increased firepower with on-loan striker Mame Biram Diouf of Manchester United.  The young Diouf teamed up with the old Diouf (El-Hadji) to run the Gunner defense ragged, especially in the first half.

Both teams started off with a flurry, trying to connect an early goal to set the tone.  In the first ten minutes both had chances at the goal, but none did the job.
In the 16' Blackburn had a chance to start the scoring when Samba headed just inches over the bar.

Theo Walcott, who was left off the World Cup squad for England, eventually found the first goal in the 20' minute when van Persie sent a perfect ball to the outside corner of the box.  Walcott had no problem converting.  ARSENAL 0-1
Arsenal's inability to put away games last season came back to bite them in the 26'.  New defensive signee Laurent Koscielny, who has had difficulty keeping up with the pace of the EPL, showed his naivete against El Hadji Diouf.  The Senagalese easily stepped around him and fired through to the middle of the box in the 26' to a smartly-advancing Mame Biram Diouf.  1-1.
Cesc Fabregas, the Gunner captain, had problems keeping up in the first half as well.  His poor play in the midfield gave the Rovers more chances than they should have had.  Perhaps it was too early for Cesc to start a match, even though he wasn't a starter for the Spanish team in the WC.  The other WC finalist, van Persie (who has somewhat of a glass jaw), fell to the carpet several times and was finally subbed off for MAROUANE CHAMAKH in the 35'.

SECOND HALF
The bright spot for Blackburn in both halves was Kalinic.  He seemed to be the only player on defense and he gave the Gunner strikers a run for their money.
In the 51' Arshavin scored on a rebound after Fabregas tried to score off Walcott's back.  The ball fell to the Russian's feet and he threaded the needle.  ARSENAL 1-2
Despite scoring the goals, Arshavin and Walcott showed their weaknesses as well.  Once they score they become very cocky and make poor decisions because of it.  With men open in the box, they instead try to take on three defenders or they shoot from the next county.  When they play teams who are better, other than the creampuffs they have matched up against thus far (including Liverpool), those wasted chances will turn into dropped points.
Because of their poor decisions, Chamakh had virtually no impact on the match.  Arsenal have to be the world's worst set-piece team (other than Chelsea).  Now that they have Marouane, they should try to capitalize (as they did last week with his heading goal) on his height in the box.  But their corners from Fabregas were POOOOOR!  They never made it past the first man, or they sailed over everyone, wasting Chamakh's talent.
Arsene Wenger must have agreed with me and subbed off Fabregas in the 68' for Rosicky, who has shown a lot of pep in the pre-season.
The last few minutes were filled with fury, with Blackburn desperate for an equalizer.  They came close twice and that had to have Wenger's boxers in a twist.  The Gunners managed to hang on and garner the three points.
To Arsene,
Please start Marouane.  He isn't crocked and he won't fall to the ground with "injuries."  Get him some proper service and he will show you what he can do!

Video of Marouane Chamakh Interview on TF1

If you are a fan of Marouane who doesn't speak French, fear not!  Thanks to a friend I have a translation of the video interview he did with French station TF1.  This is the same channel that he was on as a commentator for the World Cup:

Translation:
Journalist :
"Friday morning, Marouane Chamakh leaves his hotel with the new Arsenal "Frenchie" Laurent Koscielny. A 10-minute journey to join the training grounds."
Journalist (joking) :
"I've heard that since you are here (Marouane & Laurent), we (the journalists) could attend the training."
Marouane (laughing) :
"No, not yet. Not yet, not yet."
Journalist :
"So I have to stop here?"
Marouane :
"Yes, that's it. I am sorry, Seb (his name), but..."
Journalist :
"On the agenda, a short training session but nothing that can compare with the heavy physical preparation that he has just been through/endured."
Marouane :
"I suffered a bit, yes. I suffered a bit at the beginning. I've been given a hard time. It was very hard for me."
Arsène Wenger :
"He suffered a lot, that's true. I think that first, maybe he indulged himself a bit during the holidays and so, he enjoyed good holidays. What is outstanding is that he didn't complain. He held on, he said nothing and he has worked."
Journalist :
"Last Sunday, the Gunners began the new season with a fussy/delicate away game against Liverpool. First, it was Steven Gerrard who welcomed the Moroccan (by tripping him in the match)."
Marouane :
"It is still hurting a bit but it is the Premier League, it is the football that is like that. I also like that (the way they play in England) and I know it will be like that with nearly all the blocks so I am ready."
Journalist :
"Far from being impressed, he does a little roulette that he stole from his friend Yoann Gourcuff." **
Marouane (laughing) :
"Yes, no, I am sorry Yo then. No, it is true that it is instinctive. When it is useful, yes it is good and I like that move/trick also."
Journalist :
"But, above all, Chamakh sparked off the equalizing goal at the last minute following that hand fault by Reina. Arsène Wenger is satisfied by his new player."
Arsène Wenger :
"I like his generosity. I like his altruism/selflessness. He is a very rare kind of striker because he plays for the others, he plays to highlight/emphasize the others."
Journalist :
"Fully integrated, the number 29 has nevertheless kept his Girondins' shinpads."
Arsène Wenger (reading a magazine) :
"What is happening here? This is Bordeaux?"
Journalist :
"The shinpads."
Arsène Wenger :
"What?"
Journalist :
'The shinpads."
Arsène Wenger :
"Oh, yes, yes. It is a bit of nostalgia. It is a wink at his former club. It doesn't offend me at all."
Marouane :
"I kept some of my habits. This is one of my first games and I reckon it is not normal to play with another club's stuff but it pleases me." *****
Journalist :
"Yesterday, the co-leader and newcomer Blackpool was in London. As soon as the 12th minute, Arsenal makes the visiting team give in. Arshavin gives an assist to Walcott and this is the first goal. Then, Rosicky triggers an action with Chamakh. He is ahead of Evatt. Penalty and red card. Arshavin scores the second goal. It is like a walkover for Arsenal and Theo Walcott, brilliant, scores again. Arsenal is leading 3-0 at half-time. Then, it is a 100% French goal with Bacary Sagna who centres from the right side to Diaby, who scores. 4-0. Then 5-0, with a hat trick from Walcott, his first one in the Premier League. Marouane Chamakh is close to scoring his first official goal but totally misses his shot. He redeems himself at the very end of the game, following this corner. 6-0 for that first home game. A happiness shared with Arsenal's supporters who are just wondering about one thing:"

Arsenal supporter :
"Marouane, do you dream of becoming an Arsenal legend?"

Marouane :
"Of course, of course. But I know I still have room for improvement. I will do everything to give the maximum. And then, if one day I can be a great player here, it will be extraordinary."

Note : The vids from the game are just several pics put together because TF1 doesn't have the broadcasting rights of the Premier League.

**  As much as I love Yoann, this move is not his...it's Zidane's!!!  He revolutionized the tap-turn around.

*****  I'm happy that he kept his Girondins shinpads!  It shows that Marouane was sincere when he told the fans they would always be a part of him!

Arsenal Routs; Chamakh Off the Mark!!

After last week's draw with historic EPL winners Liverpool at Anfield, the Gunners were keen to get the full three points for their first home match at The Emirates versus promoted Blackpool.
Blackpool had stunned the Prem League last week with a 4-0 crushing of Wigan away.
Gunners' manager Arsene Wenger, who vowed to not push Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas into the mix, chose Marouane Chamakh and Andrey Arshavin up front.  Chamakh had proved in preseason to be a very potent strike partner with Samir Nasri, but Nasri was injured in the Liverpool match and will be out for a month.
The match started off with Arsenal finding difficulty gelling offensively.  Theo Walcott put a beautiful ball into the box but neither forward was there for the reception.
It wasn't until the 12' that the Gunners finally found their feet and they showed why football is called "the beautiful game."  Chamakh laid off a ball to Arshavin, who sent it Rosicky, then back to Arshavin in the middle, who passed to a wide-open Walcott, who banged it past the keeper into the bottom corner.  ARSENAL 1-0.  It was a great play, that started with Chamakh's lay-off.
For the next 18 minutes, the Gunners came close several times, first with Rosicky, then Arshavin, followed by a narrow miss by Chamakh, then a great three-play between Chamakh, Rosicky and Walcott.  But none of the chances proved fruitful.
The Seasiders were holding their own with Walcott's goal the only difference.  But in the 30' Blackpool defender Ian Evatt was chasing a ball into his own final third and didn't see Chamakh advancing behind him.  At the edge of the box Chamakh got a leg in front of Evatt and more importantly a foot on the ball.  Evatt's legs tangled around Chamakh's, bringing him down.  RED CARD and PENALTY.  Arshavin stepped up to the spot and fired home.  ARSENAL 2-0.
In the 37' Chamakh had a great chance to score, and a wonderful strike was saved superbly by Blackpool keeper Matthew Gilks.
It didn't take long for number three to come along when Chamakh sent a great pass to Wilshere, who fed Theo Walcott for his second goal.  ARSENAL 3-0.
Chamakh had another superb shot saved in the 42' and it seemed he would have to settle for no goals in the first half even though he played very good team ball.  Martin Tyler, the ESPN commentator, nailed my opinion about Marouane: "Chamakh is renowned for his aerial ability."  Yes!  It's something that Arsenal have needed in the past few seasons, as their lineup is getting shorter and shorter.  Chamakh's prowess and athleticism in the box is badly needed.
Blackpool's only two chances of the match came in the first half with Vaughan making a nice shot that was saved by Almunia in the 10' minute, and four minutes later when Taylor-Fletcher had a great chance with his header, that just went wide.
Wenger made no changes at the half, and it didn't take long into the second until Bacary Sagna fed Abou Diaby a ball into a clogged box.  Diaby had no problem with it and banged it home in the 48'.  ARSENAL 4-0.
A mere nine minutes later and young Theo Walcott, who has failed to impress for the English National Team, had no problem bagging his hat trick.  ARSENAL 5-0.
Marouane's spirited but fruitless play in the first half gave way to a more subdued second half.  He had a beautiful chance in the 61' minute when he was in the box with a wrong-footed keeper out of the way.  He was on the run and couldn't find the touch to put it in, and the ball sailed over.  The look on his face showed his frustration.  And every commentator agreed that he was due to score because his play had been great.
For the Gunners fans, a welcome sight arrived in the 62' minute when Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas made their debuts of the season.  Both had played in the World Cup Championship match, with Fab's Spanish side beating the Dutch 1-0.  Both players had been hampered by injury last season and their numbers on the pitch were given a resounding ovation.
The Gunners seemed to take their feet off the gas with a 5-0 scoreline, although the players still had many chances.
Their next goal came in the 83' when van Persie sent in a floating corner to the box, and  CHAMAKH HEADED IT HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    His unlucky shots in the first half were finally pushed aside with a powerful header to the bottom of the net.  ARSENAL 6-0.
This was the final score and Arsenal added three points to their single point from last week.  Blackpool, who started the day with a goal differential of +4, ended the day with a GD of -2.
It isn't unheard of for a promoted team to play valiantly in the first few weeks and then to slowly slide to the bottom.  The Seasiders unfortunately may already be on their slide...in the second week.  Giving them some credit, they only gave up one goal with a full squad, and the floodgates didn't open until Evatt's sending off in the 30'.

Chamakh: Man of the Match vs Liverpool!; Wenger: Chamakh is Brave

http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/man-of-the-match-against-liverpool-chamakh

Bacary Sagna celebrates Marouane's equalizer (Reina OG)

Marouane narrowly edged out Samir Nasri for Man of the Match vs. Liverpool.  Marouane had 24% of the vote, to Nasri's 22%.

Arsène Wenger says that Marouane Chamakh's late intervention at Anfield showed why he will be a Premier League success.

The Arsenal striker was well-marshalled for much of his competitive debut but showed great courage to challenge for a 50:50 ball with Pepe Reina when Tomas Rosicky swung a cross into the Liverpool box in stoppage time.
Chamakh's presence made all the difference: he was first to the ball, diverting it against the post before watching the rebound spill out of Reina's hands and into the net for a late equaliser.
Arsenal will score far prettier goals this season but, according to Wenger, the nature of Sunday's strike bodes well.
"Chamakh showed with the goal that he is not frightened to put his head and body in," said the manager.
"That is exactly what the League is all about and that is what we love here."

A Great New Video of Marouane Chamakh

Here is a great new video of Marouane Chamakh put out by Nike.

Video of Marouane Chamakh with Morocco

Here is a video of Marouane.  It is in French...sorry to my English readers!!!

Chamakh Feels Comfortable with Gunners

Marouane Chamakh is perhaps still in the process of convincing Arsenal supporters of his worth but singling out Chelsea as the side he wants to beat above all others will do his popularity no harm.

The 26-year-old's former club Bordeaux were humbled 4-0 at Stamford Bridge in September 2008 on an awful night for the French side.
Arsenal's record against the Blues is in desperate need of a boost with only two wins from their last 17 matches, chiefly due to Didier Drogba's run of 12 goals in as many outings against the Gunners.
Chelsea and Manchester United have proved a class apart in recent seasons but Chamakh is desperate to put Carlo Ancelotti's side in their place — although he will have to wait until 3 October for the teams' first encounter in west London.
He said: “I would like to play against Chelsea again. When we went there with Bordeaux , we got hammered and it is a horrible memory.
“It was so bad that I wished the referee had stopped the match 15 minutes before the end. So I hope that this time I will beat them with Arsenal.”
Chamakh's only other trip to England prior to his free transfer to Emirates Stadium this summer came at Liverpool, again with Bordeaux, in October 2006.
Luis Garcia scored twice as Anfield witnessed a comfortable 3-0 home win but the passionate support Chamakh encountered that night swelled his desire to move to England.
“I used to watch all the big Premier League games on TV in France with the amazing fans in great stadiums, with great goals and great players, and I used to think I want to play there one day',” said the Morocco international.
“And then I played against Chelsea and Liverpool with Bordeaux in the Champions League and those two experiences were unbelievable. Despite the two defeats, I loved the way the fans supported their team. I love the rhythm of the game. For a player, there is nothing better than England. This is a real football country with love and passion for the game and the clubs.
“I guess with my height and my qualities in the air, playing in England was always the best choice for me. I have always dreamt of playing in this league.
“I know that I still have a lot of hard work to do to perform well in the Premier League but I am very motivated and hungry to do well. There is still a lot of room for improvement in my game.”

Chamakh, who was born and raised in France, is taking English lessons but has the benefit of a strong French contingent already at the club.
Manager Arsene Wenger always insists players speak English in the dressing room but during the close season, Chamakh has been helped to settle by his fellow natives.
“Samir Nasri, who is a good friend, took me under his wing a bit and made it very easy for me,” added Chamakh.
“It was really good to have him with me and I spent a lot of time at his house watching the World Cup. I am an easy going guy and I knew there wouldn't be any problem integrating within this group.”

Chamakh Helps Gunners Draw with Liverpool

Thanks to a last-minute scramble in the box with Liverpool keeper, Pepe Reina, Marouane Chamakh saved a point for his new Gunners team on his introduction to Premier League footy.
As the cross came in Marouane went for the ball and he tangled with Reina.  When Reina tried to keep the ball out of the goal he knocked it in.  Since Reina was the last player to touch it they marked it as an own goal, and Chamakh was not credited with the goal.
Playing at Anfield for the first match of the season is tough enough, but Marouane did very well and manager Arsene Wenger was pleased with his performance:

On if this team can win something...

"We finished third last year and our ambition is to progress, to improve. I feel the two players who we bought have done well - I believe Chamakh and Koscielny had an impress performance today. We are still a bit short defensively."

On Chamakh's introduction to the Premier League...

"That is exactly what the League is all about and that is what we love here. He showed with the goal that he is not frightened to put his head and body in."

Chamakh: Liverpool Under Pressure

Marouane Chamakh believes Liverpool is under more pressure to succeed than Arsenal this term coming off of a very disappointing season.

Following an impressive second place finish two seasons ago, Liverpool came into last season with big expectations.
However, the Reds struggled to a seventh place finish in the Premier League, and Chamakh insists the poor term that Liverpool is coming off of will put them under more pressure to perform than the Gunners this season.
“Arsenal had a good season." Chamakh told The Mirror. “They were in third place.
“The over-riding objective was to qualify for the Champions League and I think they did their maximum.
“There is pressure at a club like Arsenal, but Liverpool will be under more pressure because they had a bad season. It’ll be difficult for us, but it’ll be difficult for Liverpool too.
“We have an edge because we don’t have any pressure on us since it is an away match.
“I know it will be hard, but I am confident. We’ll do everything we can to bring points back from up there.”
Wenger was hoping to bring the Morocco international to Arsenal a year ago, but the Frenchman opted to wait until Chamakh’s contact ran out this summer rather than paying Bordeaux’s £12 million asking price.
Chamakh has impressed in Arsenal’s pre-season preparations for the season, and for the 26-year-old the Premier League opener will be the culmination of a dream.
“I have been dreaming for a year of playing for a team like Arsenal against teams like Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.”

Arsene Wenger: Chamakh is What We Need

 By Nick Teale
"Marouane Chamakh can give us something which is very important in England - he is good in the air."
That's the belief of Arsène Wenger, who outlined what he is expecting from his new forward during Friday's pre-match press conference.
Chamakh was the Frenchman's first summer signing and made a good first impression at Emirates Stadium with a well-taken goal against AC Milan in the Emirates Cup. The Moroccan striker won over the fans and his manager has high expectations ahead of a potential Premier League debut at Liverpool.
"Marouane Chamakh for me is a striker who works very hard," said Wenger. "He is a team player and makes players around him good and better.
"He had a very good pre-season and can give us something which is very important in England - he is good in the air.
"He has everything you would want from a typical centre forward. That means people who play to fight up front and work very hard for the team.  That is what I expect from him.  That is why every team which has him in the side, every player loves him."

Chamakh Scores First as Arsenal Hangs On

Arsenal had their hands full in their last friendly of the pre-season.  The EPL kicks off next week and Arsenal will travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool in their first match.  The Gunners were looking to tune-up their fitness and give Arsene Wenger a better idea of his 25-man first team.
Legia Warsaw, who are in fourth place in the Ekstraklasa, have four months to play in their season.  This put them at an advantage over the Gunners, who still don't have starters Fabregas, van Persie, and Almunia, who are just back from World Cup duty (with Fabregas and Almunia victorious with Spain over van Persie's Holland).  Legia took full advantage of this by scoring first in the 17' when Cabral unleashed a monster from the top of the box.  Fabianski, who started in goal, had no chance.
The home side, opening a brand new stadium, nabbed the second goal in the 33' when a ball that ricocheted in the area off Arsenal's Koscielny went in for an own goal. 2-0.
Jedrzejczyk (say that fast five times) scored in the 36' to put Legia up 3-0 on their powerhouse guests.
Arsenal finally kicked into gear in the 38' when Samir Nasri launched a freekick in that found the head of MAROUANE CHAMAKH!!! GOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLL!  His superb heading skills gave the Legia keeper and defenders no chance.  It was nice to pull one back before halftime, with the score now 3-1.

Arsene Wenger made a few changes at the half.  Those changes proved fruitful as Emmaneul Eboue scored in the 52' and then again in the 60'.  The Gunners were now level at 3-3.  Kieran Gibbs added another in the 63' to put Arsenal on top 3-4.  But Legia wasn't backing down and Polish mouthful Jedrzejczyk (I'm sure to most Poles that this name is as easy as Johnson...) bagged his second to level the score again at 4-4.  But Arsenal had more in the tank.  Chamakh was subbed out along with Wilshere in the 72'.  Chamakh's replacement, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas scored in the 81' and Samir Nasri scored from a freekick in the 84'.  The scoreline was now 4-6 Arsenal, and Nasri's goal was well-deserved for his spirited play throughout the match.  He was by far the best player on the pitch today.
Legia found a late goal in the 90' but it wasn't enought to top the EPL contenders.  Final score 5-6.  Arsenal will have to sort out the defensive issues if they want to make a run for the Barclay's title.  Giving up 5 goals, even to a fit mid-season team, is never a good sign.
Chamakh scores against AC Milan

The good news is that Nasri is on form, and Chamakh is now 3-3 in pre-season games.  Selected by Arsenal fans as the Man of the Match vs. AC Milan, his heading skills will be necessary to score against more physical EPL defenders.  I think he's up for the task!

Chamakh Celebrates Emirates Cup Win

Arsenal won the Emirates Cup after beating Celtic on Sunday and drawing with AC Milan on Saturday.  Here are a few photos of Marouane celebrating the win.

Proud of his first trophy with Arsenal

A few words of praise for Marouane:
Marouane Chamakh, who has scored twice in pre-season, is likely to be given another run-out following his free transfer from Bordeaux. Bacary Sagna added: "Chamakh can make the difference because he is a good player, can keep the ball and score great goals.

"It will be very important to have a player like that in front of goal.
"He looks like Manu Adebayor - they are both very good in front of goal and it's a good thing for the team."
Bordeaux captain Alou Diarra said: "His qualities are that he has great presence in the penalty area, he's got a great physique, he's tall and strong in the air and he's a fighter.
"I think they like players who fight and never give up in England and he is certainly one of those. He is capable of scoring goals and also holding the ball up. He's a very complete player. He will bring a lot to Arsenal."
